How to Make Cooking a Habit (realistic edition)

Cooking may seem like a pain in the ass- and to be fair, it sometimes is. But in my opinion, it's one of the funnest ('most fun,' whatever), most satisfying things in the entire world.

Anyway, you're here because you want to make daily cooking a habit. Maybe it's because you want to eat healthier, or give your bank account some room to breathe, or maybe you want to have nice, homemade meals with your family, talking peacefully about your day over a mahogany dining table. Or, maybe you were recently inspired by the latest episode of Master Chef Junior.

Whatever the reason, this unqualified teen (that's me!) is about to give you some advice. If you're into that, please subscribe, and comment down below whatever the frick you want!

Let us begin.

1. Buy a Cookbook

This was actually the first tip in my last how-to (how to be a traveller), but I feel like it's relevant here too. Buying a cookbook is a great way to inspire yourself to cook more- the pictures in cookbook recipes are usually way prettier than they are online, and food porn makes for great inspiration. Also, if you payed for the book, you might as well use it.

My top cookbook recommendation would be Anthony Bourdain's Appetites, as most of its recipes are super approachable, but always taste totally awesome. You can also check out some of my other cookbook recommendations ↝here↜.

2. Stock smart

Look up a bunch of recipes that you're interested in. Maybe you love Italian, so you look up recipes for ravioli, linguini, and cacio e pepe. Look at their ingredient lists, and take note of those weird little things (maybe oregano, thyme, or even parmesan) that keep appearing, but you don't have in your pantry. Stock up on those things (but not before reading tip #3), so that a lack of ingredients never keeps you from putting pan to stove.

3. High Standards are for Losers

Now it's time to buy those ingredients, but bear this in mind: You don't need to be a 'foodie.' Local, artisanal farmer's markets are the best option if you can afford them, but if you don't have the cash, Safeway is a perfectly awesome option. Costco is fine too. Seriously. I mean, don't buy old meat, and avoid wilted veggies, but other than that- look at you! You're buying ingredients! To cook with! Hell yeah!

4. Make it a Party

By party, I don't mean you have to invite guests. If you want to, go ahead. (that's sorta my next tip). But when I say you should party, I mean you should have a solo jam sesh to Africa by Toto while grilling that rare steak like the bad motherfucker you are. Extra points for using a ladle as a mic.

Song suggestions include; Isn't She Lovely (Stevie Wonder), I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton), How Far I'll Go (Moana), and Buddy Holly (Weezer). But, like in cooking, the possibilities are endless.

5. Don't Hog it All

Share that great paella you just made. Send it out into the world. Make your friends and family eat it up. Or, even better, invite them over, and let them watch you fire up that grill. They will be so impressed, and they'll probably make you cook for them again. But you're gonna want to practice and hone your skills before you show off to everyone else, so... Practice! Make cooking a habit for the mere purpose of impressing others!*

*I'm kidding, of course. Cook because you love eating.

**Though making your family think you're a kool kat isn't the worst thing in the world.

6. Have Some Fun, Hun!

Here are some more things, (other than #4, my favorite method), that you can do while cooking to make the process super fun.

- Make a friend cook with you (preferably someone on your cooking level)
- Narrate your own actions like you're on a cooking show
- Sing acapella the ENTIRE time (I dare you)
- Pretend you're Gordon Ramsey, then yell at yourself for, like, dropping a spoon
- Sell that fried rice like you're on Shark Tank
- Dance like you mean it. Tango it out, solo style. Your tortilla soup won't judge you.

That's all, folks! Hope you found it helpful. If you did, please consider subscribing to this blog- I post food/culture related content every day. And if you'd like, please comment down below your own tips and tricks for consistent cooking. If you don't want to, though, don't worry! It's okay! I love you! Bye now!
